Student Eligibility

Town Eligibility: Students are eligible if meeting one of the town/location categories below:鈥

  • Students currently enrolled in a designated Massachusetts secondary school, residing hometown or home school (public or private) in the following towns:鈥疌helsea, Danvers, Everett, Gloucester, Haverhill, Lynn, Malden, Peabody, Revere, Rockport, Salem, Salisbury, Saugus, Wakefield, or Winthrop.鈥

  • As of Spring 2023, we have expanded eligibility to include all high schools located within Essex County. Each of these additional high schools may enroll up to five students per semester in the Salem State University Dual Enrollment program. Student selection is at the discretion of the high school Guidance Director.鈥

  • A minimum high school grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 is required to participate听

  • Approval from the student鈥檚 guidance counselor/school official is required (on the application)听

  • An overall college GPA of 2.0 or higher (for Salem State) is required to remain eligible for dual enrollment participation in subsequent semester(s)听

How to Apply

Course Selection

Please replace with: Prospective Dual Enrollment students are invited to meet with an advisor to discuss the program as well as course selection. Please email dualenrollment@salemstate.edu to schedule an Advising appointment. You will hear back within 24-48 business hours.

The Department of Higher Education has placed an emphasis on courses that are "easily transferable" and qualify under the , or is within the disciplines of computer science, technology or engineering. Certain courses such as remedial and physical activity courses are not allowed for participation in this program.听

  • An eligible course must be a 100 or 200 level, credit-bearing college-level course that counts for no less than three credit hours.鈥

  • The course must fall into a Salem State University General Education Category.听听

    • Written Communication (W-I)听

    • Oral Communication鈥(OC)听

    • Personal Growth and Responsibility鈥(PGR)听

    • Creative Expression and Appreciation鈥(CEA)听

    • World Cultures鈥(WC)听

    • Human Past鈥(HP)听

    • Contemporary Society鈥(CS)听

    • Scientific Reasoning鈥(SR)听

    • Quantitative Reasoning鈥(QR)听

  • First-Year Seminar and Honors level courses are not eligible.听听

  • Some courses may require other pre-requisite courses to be taken for eligibility.听

  • Additional courses will require payment.听听

There are several modes of instruction listed, but the ones to search on are:听听

  • In Person: These classes meet face鈥恡o鈥恌ace. All instruction occurs in a designated campus location (classroom) during regularly scheduled predetermined days and times (synchronous) for which instructor and students are physically present throughout; will require detailed health and safety protocols for engagement among faculty and students.听

  • Hybrid Asynchronous: Student learning occurs both in scheduled in鈥恜erson class meetings during specific published times and locations, and in asynchronous online class interactions. Typically, hybrid asynchronous classes will meet for fewer hours in person than standard in person classes, with more out of class work required.听听

  • Hybrid Synchronous: Student learning occurs both in scheduled in鈥恜erson class meetings during specific published times and locations, and in synchronous online class meetings during specific published times. Typically, hybrid synchronous classes will meet for fewer hours in person than standard in person classes, but will have required online class meetings.听听

  • Asynchronous Online: Student learning occurs exclusively online, asynchronously; no convenings of the entire class; student engagement with the faculty member occurs as requested via a digital platform. There will be no prescheduled meeting times either online or in鈥恜erson.听听

  • Blended Modality: Student learning occurs primarily online, asynchronously, but with pre鈥恠cheduled synchronous in virtual convenings of the entire class (e.g. via ZOOM).听听

  • Synchronous Online: Student learning occurs exclusively online, during regularly scheduled predetermined days and times, for which instructor and students are virtually present throughout (e.g. via ZOOM).听
